Where Mental Age Came From
Alfred Binet introduced mental age in 1905 to identify French schoolchildren needing extra help. William Stern then turned this into the intelligence quotient by dividing mental age by chronological age.
The concept works reasonably for children, whose abilities climb steeply year over year. It collapses for adults: raw reasoning ability doesn't keep rising past the early twenties, so a 40-year-old and a 25-year-old with identical performance would get absurdly different ratio IQs.
What Replaced It
Modern tests use deviation scoring: your performance is compared to a norming sample of your own age group and placed on a bell curve with mean 100 and standard deviation 15. No mental age is computed at any point.
The idea survives informally — 'mental age' quizzes online are entertainment, and clinicians sometimes describe severe developmental conditions in age-equivalent terms to help families understand daily functioning. But no reputable modern IQ score is derived from mental age.
